Your First Therapy Session: What to Expect at Thrive Creative Arts Therapy

Starting therapy is a big step. It often brings a mix of curiosity, hope, and nerves.

At Thrive Creative Arts Therapy, we want your first session to feel grounded, welcoming, and centered around you. Whether you are coming in for yourself, your child, or your teen, we have designed the experience to be supportive, creative, and truly human.

Here is a clear and comforting guide to what you can expect during your first session at Thrive.

Before You Come In: Intake and Paperwork

Once you reach out, our intake coordinator, Courtney, will help match you with the therapist who best fits your needs. This includes someone experienced with your age group, your goals, and the concerns you are navigating.

You will receive intake paperwork ahead of time, including:

  • Consent forms
  • Brief background questions
  • Insurance or payment information
  • Policies around scheduling, confidentiality, and communication

Completing these forms in advance helps your therapist get a sense of your history so your first session can feel meaningful, not rushed.

When You Arrive: A Calming, Creative Space

Our offices are intentionally designed to feel warm, safe, and grounding, with artwork, natural light, and materials for creative expression.

You will likely notice right away that it is not a sterile or intimidating environment. It is a space that invites openness.

You will be greeted by your therapist, who will walk you through the flow of the session and check in about how you are feeling as you arrive.

The First Few Minutes: Building Comfort

Your therapist will not jump in without first building connection.

We usually begin by:

  • Checking in on what brought you here
  • Learning about what you are hoping to gain
  • Talking through what therapy looks like at Thrive
  • Answering any questions you have

For kids and teens, we use age-appropriate language, playfulness, and gentle pacing.

For adults, we follow your comfort level and the pace you set.

This part is simply about getting to know you.

How We Begin the Work: Talk, Art, or Both

Not every first session involves art, and not every session is talk therapy. You have options.

If you are open to artmaking

We may offer a very simple, low-pressure creative prompt or a gentle introduction to the materials to help you settle into the space.

If you prefer talking

We will ask questions that help us understand:

  • What has been happening recently
  • Any patterns or history that feel important
  • Your strengths and supports
  • What has been feeling heavy or stuck

If you are not sure

We will find a middle ground together. This is your session. Your therapist will not push you into something you are not ready for.

Understanding Your Needs: Assessment Without Pressure

Throughout the first session, your therapist is gently assessing:

  • What symptoms or challenges might be present
  • How stress or trauma may be affecting you
  • What coping strategies you already use
  • Your emotional regulation patterns
  • Your strengths, creativity, and resources

This is not a test. It is simply a way to better understand how to support you.

For children and teens, we also gather important developmental, social, and school-related information.

Toward the End: Mapping Out Next Steps

Every first session ends with clarity.

Your therapist will talk with you about:

  • A treatment plan that makes sense for your goals
  • How often you will meet
  • Approaches that may be helpful, such as art therapy, EMDR, CBT, or EFT tapping
  • What you can expect in future sessions
  • Any questions or concerns you still have

If the session is for a child or teen, we often speak briefly with the parent or guardian at the end to share themes and recommendations while still protecting the young person’s privacy.

After Your First Session: You Do Not Have to Have It All Figured Out

Many clients leave the first session feeling:

  • Relieved
  • Hopeful
  • Seen and understood
  • A little tired, because processing takes energy
  • Curious about what comes next

All of these responses are normal. Therapy is a process, and the first session simply opens the door.

Our Promise: You Are Not Doing This Alone

At Thrive, we believe in healing that is collaborative, creative, and compassionate.

You do not need to know exactly what to say. You do not need to be fully ready. You just need to show up as you are, and we will meet you there.

If you are considering starting therapy for yourself, your child, or your family, we are here to walk with you.

When you are ready, reach out. We are ready too.
